Do you have a someday maybe file ?
Well I do and it’s an ever increasing list of projects and things I’d like to do. Sometimes it seems overwhelming and other times downright exciting.
As far as quilt projects go, it’s a collection of sketches, images and random thoughts. I’m inspired by an infinite array of things - not necessarily in the quilting world.
My latest jump off point is the home renovating show here in Australia called The Block. The latest bathroom reveal had the most divine teal coloured paneling that had me fossicking through my Liberty stash looking for possibilities.
I can imagine my Lawley Stars Quilt in these fabrics...
It’s not always that random. Sometimes it’s an antique quilt that I’ve seen in a book that has an amazing border or a divine Liberty print whose colour palette starts a thread of creativity. Whatever it is that starts that initial inspiration, I guarantee you the final product usually ends up somewhat different. My quilts tend to evolve. Some of it has to do with what kind of piecing I feel like doing at the time and a lot of it is has to do with a colour palette I feel I need to play with.
My Beaumont Square quilt started with a pre-Covid trip to France. I needed hand sewing for a month - it was my most pressing concern, nevermind packing clothes. I needed something that didn’t require much prep in terms of layout and fittingly in a colour palette that made me think of France.
Beaumont Square Quilt Pattern
Fast forward many nights sitting by the fire and the centre medallion of Beaumont Square was done. It could have quite easily gone in other directions with the Quarter circle blocks becoming perhaps borders in a vastly different layout.
Lately I’ve been in a bit of creative funk. Partly too many ideas and partly not enough headspace. A lot has happened in our family in the last year that has shaken us up and frankly without my stitching I would have been lost. Thankfully I’ve had a few WIP’s whose designs were already ‘evolved’ so I haven’t had to think too much - just stitch..
I’m currently hand quilting a Linen and Liberty medallion quilt that as yet doesn’t have a name. The colours remind me of my maternal Grandmother - Polly.
If you have any quilt name ideas drop me a line.
It’s a little different colourwise to what I usually do but I’ve really enjoyed exploring a different colour palette.
I just love hand quilting, I find it so calming and the weather lately here in Perth has definitely been quilt worthy.
And so, that leads me to now…
My someday maybe file is out as I ponder what comes next. It will involve diving into my Liberty stash I’m sure or even some stash accumulation. Life has calmed a bit and I look forward to planning something new.
